A Community With Its Own Story
Asphalt paving in Sun Village serves an unincorporated community of 12,345 people on about 10.8 square miles east of Palmdale. Los Angeles County's assessor places the center of the community at Palmdale Boulevard and 87th Street East. Sun Village has a history that sets it apart: in the 1930s Melvin Ray Grubbs moved here and established the Antelope Valley's first Black community, and in 1939 he bought 1,000 acres east of Palmdale. Jackie Robinson Park opened in 1965 and is still a community landmark.
Independent of Palmdale
In 2014 Sun Village and the City of Palmdale signed a memorandum of understanding under which Palmdale removed Sun Village from its sphere of influence. In practical terms for paving, that means the roads here are Los Angeles County roads, and work in the right-of-way goes through Los Angeles County Public Works, not the city. Sun Village and Littlerock also share a Community Standards District, approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2007, which sets local land use standards.
What homes here need
The 2020 census counted 3,402 housing units in Sun Village. Many sit on larger lots with long drives, older asphalt laid on thin base, or gravel. The jobs we see most:
- Replacing a cracked, sunken driveway with a properly built one
- Paving a gravel drive and adding a parking pad
- Rebuilding broken edges where tires ride off the pavement
- Crack filling and sealcoating to stretch the life of a sound drive
Churches and community lots
The first Baptist church in Sun Village opened in 1950, and churches remain central to community life here. Church lots see heavy use one or two days a week and sit idle the rest. We schedule overlays, sealcoating and restriping for midweek so services are not affected, and we lay out accessible stalls to the 2010 ADA Standards when a lot is restriped.
Wind and dust
The eastern Antelope Valley is open and windy. We clean surfaces right before paving so blown sand does not get between layers, and we keep the road in front of your property clean during the job.
Long-term owners, older drives
Many Sun Village families have owned their property for decades, and some driveways have been patched and overlaid several times. Layers of old patches on a weak base keep cracking, because each new layer only hides the problem for a while. When we see that, we recommend removing the layers, rebuilding the base and paving once. It costs more up front than another patch, but it ends the cycle.
Large lots, room to park
With more than 10 square miles and about 3,400 homes, Sun Village has more room per lot than most of the valley. Owners often add a parking pad beside the driveway for a work truck, boat or trailer. We tie it into the existing drive with a clean joint and build it to the heavier section those vehicles need.
Timing for wind
Afternoon winds in the east valley often pick up in spring. We plan paving for mornings and calm days when we can.

Sun Village Questions
Does the City of Palmdale issue permits for Sun Village?
No. Sun Village is unincorporated, and Palmdale removed it from its sphere of influence in 2014. Los Angeles County Public Works handles road permits.
Can you work on a church lot without disrupting services?
Yes. We schedule paving, sealing and striping between services and phase larger jobs over several weekdays.
My drive is gravel with a concrete apron. Can the asphalt tie into it?
Yes. We cut a clean edge and match the height so the transition is smooth.
My driveway has been patched many times. Should I patch again?
Probably not. Repeated patches over a weak base keep failing. Removing the old layers and rebuilding the base is the lasting fix.
Do you stripe church lots in Sun Village?
Yes, including accessible stalls sized to the 2010 ADA Standards when a lot is restriped.
