Around the Lake on the Old Road
Asphalt paving in Elizabeth Lake covers homes in a community surrounded by the Angeles National Forest, at about 3,389 feet in the northern Sierra Pelona Mountains, on the western edge of the Antelope Valley. Elizabeth Lake had 1,651 residents at the 2020 census and 733 housing units, 587 of them owner-occupied. The lake itself sits in a canyon along the San Andreas Fault and dries up periodically depending on rainfall.
A watering stop for centuries
Elizabeth Lake was known as La Laguna de Chico Lopez in the Spanish and Mexican eras, when it was a watering stop on El Camino Viejo. Later it was a stop on the Gold Rush-era Stockton to Los Angeles Road, and from 1858 to 1861 it lay between two Butterfield Overland Mail stations. In 1907 William Mulholland began the Elizabeth Tunnel for the Los Angeles Aqueduct, about 5 miles long and 285 feet beneath the valley floor.
Homes near water and slope
Homes around a lake bed and on the hills above it deal with two kinds of water: runoff coming down the hillsides in storms, and soft ground near the lake. We test the subgrade before paving near low ground and dig out and replace anything soft. On the slopes, we shape the drive to shed water before it reaches the road.
Typical work
- Gravel drives paved with proper base and drainage
- Older asphalt drives rebuilt where the edges have failed
- Parking areas for boats, trailers and RVs
- Crack filling and sealcoating before winter
Cold and short seasons
Winters are cold at nearly 3,400 feet. Paving here is best from late spring through early fall. Cracks should be filled before the first hard freezes so water does not work into the base.
Part-time homes and long absences
Some homes around the lake are used seasonally. A driveway that sits unused through winter can still crack and let water in. Before you leave for the season, crack filling closes the gaps; when you come back, a quick check for heaved or broken edges catches problems before they spread. We can schedule both visits.
Repairs for older drives
Older driveways here often have broken edges where the asphalt meets dirt shoulders. HomeGuide puts saw-cut patches at about $4 to $12 per square foot and hot crack filling at about $0.50 to $3 per linear foot. For a sound driveway, those repairs plus a seal coat can add years of life for a fraction of replacement cost.
Equipment access
Some drives here are narrow or steep. We look at access during the estimate and choose equipment that fits.
County permits
Elizabeth Lake is unincorporated Los Angeles County. Approach work on county roads needs a Los Angeles County Public Works road permit, which we plan into the schedule. Call (661) 466-4552 or

Elizabeth Lake Questions
Is ground near the lake bed a problem for paving?
It can be soft. We probe and dig out soft spots before building the base.
Can you build a boat or trailer parking pad?
Yes. We build it to a heavier section with a deeper base.
When is the best time to pave here?
Late spring through early fall, when ground temperatures let hot asphalt compact.
Can you check my driveway while I am away?
We can schedule a fall crack-filling visit and a spring check, and send photos.
Do you pave lake access drives?
We pave private drives and parking areas. Anything at the shoreline itself may involve other agencies, which you would need to check first.
How much does crack filling cost on an older drive?
HomeGuide lists crack filling at about $0.50 to $3 per linear foot, and Angi puts a typical full driveway at $100 to $400. Filling cracks before winter is one of the cheapest ways to protect a drive at this elevation.
Is there a minimum charge for repairs?
HomeGuide notes many companies charge a minimum of $100 to $250 for asphalt repairs. Combining several small repairs into one visit makes the most of it.
