A Canyon With Real Weather
Asphalt paving in Green Valley is different from anything on the valley floor. Green Valley lies in the Sierra Pelona range in San Francisquito Canyon, about 19 miles west of Palmdale and 20 miles north of Santa Clarita, at about 2,936 feet. It averages about 19.87 inches of precipitation a year, more than three times what Palmdale gets, and snow falls about three to six times each winter. Records run from 12 degrees to 106 degrees. Water, not sun, is the main threat to pavement here.
Drainage first
With real rainfall, a driveway has to be built to move water: cross slope on every section, outlets where water leaves the pavement, and culverts or dips where a drive crosses a drainage. Water that sits on or under asphalt softens the base, and snowmelt finds every crack. We fill cracks before winter and correct low spots rather than patching them.
Small, owner-occupied community
Green Valley had 1,036 residents and 489 housing units at the 2020 census, about 82.6 percent of occupied units owner-occupied, across almost 13 square miles. Properties are spread out, and drives are often long and curving.
Typical work
- Canyon driveways rebuilt with base and drainage corrected
- Gravel drives paved where they wash out every winter
- Parking and turnaround areas
- Crack filling and sealcoating
Stage road history
Widow Smith's Station, a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail, stood about a mile south of Green Valley on San Francisquito Canyon Road. Its building, believed to date from the 1858 to 1861 stage line, still stands.
Canyon roads and access
San Francisquito Canyon Road is the main route into Green Valley, and it is narrow and winding. Getting paving equipment and loaded trucks in takes planning: smaller equipment for tight drives, delivery times that avoid school and commute traffic, and room on your property to stage. We look at access during the estimate and tell you what equipment the job needs.
Repairs after wet winters
After a wet winter, canyon driveways often show potholes and broken edges where water got under the asphalt. HomeGuide puts pothole repairs at about $100 to $400 and saw-cut patches at $4 to $12 per square foot. Fixing those promptly, and correcting the drainage that caused them, keeps one bad winter from ruining the whole drive.
Rain and sealing
Seal coats need dry weather to cure, so we seal here in late spring or summer.
Planning
Paving here is best from late spring through early fall, when the ground is dry and warm. County roads fall under Los Angeles County Public Works road permits. Call (661) 466-4552 or

Green Valley Questions
Does more rain change how you build the driveway?
Yes. Drainage gets more attention: cross slopes, outlets and culvert crossings, plus crack filling before winter. Water that sits under asphalt is what breaks it apart in a wet canyon.
Can you pave in winter here?
We avoid it. Cold, wet ground does not let hot asphalt compact properly. Late spring through early fall is the window.
My gravel drive washes out every winter. What fixes it?
Grading it to shed water, adding a compacted base and paving it, with outlets where water should leave.
Can paving equipment fit up my narrow drive?
Usually. We size equipment to the access and tell you at the estimate if anything needs to be moved.
Does snow damage asphalt?
Snow itself does not, but meltwater in cracks freezes and widens them. Filling cracks before winter prevents most of that damage.
How long does a canyon driveway take?
Base and drainage work often take longer than the paving itself. Plan on several days for a long drive, depending on access and how much correction the base needs.
Can you add a culvert where water crosses my drive?
We shape crossings to pass water, either as a dip or over a culvert. Larger drainage channels may need input from the county, which we will tell you about at the estimate.
Do you seal canyon driveways?
Yes, in late spring or summer when the weather is dry. Seal coats need dry conditions to cure, so we avoid the wetter months here.
