Long Drives in a Rural Community
Asphalt paving in Agua Dulce is almost all rural work. The 2020 census classified 100 percent of Agua Dulce's 3,451 residents as living in rural areas, spread across nearly 23 square miles of the Sierra Pelona Valley. The community lies along State Route 14, about halfway between Santa Clarita and Palmdale, at around 2,526 feet. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through, and Vasquez Rocks, the sandstone formations named for the bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, sit inside the community.
Properties people keep
Of Agua Dulce's 1,303 housing units, about 86.4 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Most properties are large parcels with long driveways, gates and parking for trailers, and owners often want a driveway that ends the cycle of regrading gravel after every storm.
Hilly ground and washes
The valley floor is cut by washes and rises toward rocky hills. A long driveway here often crosses a low spot where water runs during storms. We plan those crossings with a dip or a culvert-friendly profile, not a hump that dams water. On slopes, we set the cross slope and edge so water leaves the pavement at controlled points rather than carving out the shoulder.
What we do here
- Gravel and dirt drives paved end to end, or in phases
- Turnarounds wide enough for trailers
- Parking pads for RVs, horse trailers and equipment
- Old asphalt drives rebuilt with proper base
- Sealcoating and crack filling for sound drives
County roads and gates
Agua Dulce is unincorporated Los Angeles County, so approach work on a county road needs a Los Angeles County Public Works road permit. Many properties also have a gate set back from the road. We pave up to and through the gate and leave room for the gate track or posts.
Filming and quiet work
Agua Dulce is a working location for film and TV shoots, and the area's quiet is part of why people live here. We schedule work during normal daytime hours, keep trucks and equipment on your property where possible, and keep the county road in front of your property clean as we go. For gated properties with long drives, we coordinate access so deliveries do not block the road.
Equestrian and trailer areas
Horse properties need room for trailers to turn and park. We build those areas to a heavier section, 3 to 4 inches of compacted asphalt over a deeper base, and keep grades gentle at gates and barn entrances so trailers do not drag. A pad under trailer tongue jacks keeps them from punching into the surface on hot days.
Phasing a long drive
If the whole drive is more than you want to pave this year, we start at the house or the road, whichever matters more, and leave a clean, squared joint so the next phase ties in without a weak seam. Call (661) 466-4552 or

Agua Dulce Questions
Can you pave through a wash crossing?
Yes, with a profile that lets water pass. Damming a wash with a raised driveway causes washouts, so we design the crossing first.
How long does a long rural drive take to pave?
Grading and base work can take several days on a long drive. Paving itself often goes quickly once the base is ready.
Do you work around gates?
Yes. We pave up to and through gates and leave room for tracks and posts.
How do you handle a very long drive budget-wise?
We price it in sections, and you choose how much to pave now. Width and thickness options also change the cost.
Will you keep the county road clean?
Yes. Sweeping and cleanup of anything tracked onto the road are part of every job.
Do you pave along the Pacific Crest Trail crossings?
We work on private property and driveways. Anything in a trail easement or public right-of-way needs the owning agency's approval first, and we can help you describe the scope.
What does a long Agua Dulce drive cost?
It depends on length, width and base condition. At HomeGuide's $5 to $12 per square foot for standard asphalt, a 12 by 250 foot drive (3,000 square feet) would run about $15,000 to $36,000.
