Out Toward the County Line

Asphalt paving in Llano takes us to the far southeastern corner of the Antelope Valley, about 25 miles southeast of Palmdale and a few miles from the San Gabriel Mountains, near the San Bernardino County line. Llano is an unincorporated community, with Pearblossom to the west and Pinon Hills to the east. Its name is Spanish for plain, which describes the land well: wide, open desert where most properties are rural.

Llano del Rio

The ruins of Llano del Rio, a socialist colony, still stand along Highway 138 east of 165th Street East. The community moved away and the site was abandoned in 1918. The stone ruins are a reminder of how long people have tried to make a go of this stretch of desert, and of how much ground there is out here between neighbors.

Pearblossom Highway frontage

Pearblossom Highway, State Route 138, runs through the heart of Llano as one of its two main streets. It is a state highway, so approach work on it falls under Caltrans. Business lots and yards along it see truck traffic and need heavier sections at entrances. County side roads fall under Los Angeles County Public Works road permits.

Typical work

  • Long ranch drives paved in full or in phases
  • Equipment and truck yards built to a heavy section
  • Parking pads for RVs and trailers
  • Dust control: paving areas that blow dust every windy afternoon

Sand and wind

Open land means wind. We clean every surface right before paving so sand does not get between layers, choose calm days for sealing, and backfill edges so wind does not undercut them. For long drives, a crown sheds both water and sand toward the shoulders.

Starting a new homesite

Land around Llano is still being built on, and new homes often start with a bare lot and a dirt track. If you are building, plan the driveway with the house: where trucks will come in during construction, where water flows, and where you will park later. We can lay and compact the base early so construction traffic has a firm route, then pave once the heavy trucks are gone.

Cost of distance

Travel and hauling are part of every job's cost, and Llano is about 25 miles from Palmdale. Grouping several jobs in the east valley, or combining paving with sealing or striping on the same trip, keeps those costs down. HomeGuide notes that some contractors charge a minimum of $2,000 or more for driveway paving, which matters most on small, remote jobs.

Sand control

We compact shoulders and suggest gravel borders so blown sand has a place to settle off the pavement.

Travel and scheduling

Llano is a longer drive for us than central Palmdale, so we try to group work out here. Call (661) 466-4552 or

Llano Questions

Will you travel to Llano for a small job?

Yes, though we try to group small jobs in the east valley. Ask, and we will tell you when we are next out that way.

Can you pave a yard for trucks?

Yes. We build truck yards with a deeper base and thicker asphalt where loads are heavy.

Who handles approach permits on Highway 138?

Caltrans, because it is a state highway. County roads go through Los Angeles County Public Works.

Should I pave before or after building my house?

Lay the base early for construction traffic, then pave after the heavy trucks are done. That avoids damage to new asphalt.

How long can a ranch drive be?

As long as you need. We price by area and can phase long drives over several seasons.

Can you pave around the ruins on Highway 138?

No. The Llano del Rio ruins are a historic site, not private paving work. We pave private drives, yards and lots in the area.

Do you pave dirt access roads shared by neighbors?

Yes. We can price by section so each owner sees what their share covers.

Can you build a heavy pad for a water truck or equipment?

Yes. We use a deeper aggregate base and thicker asphalt sized to the load, the same approach used for commercial truck routes.
